Humanities

The Humanities curriculum offers an opportunity for our students to gain the knowledge, understanding and skills required to thrive in an ever-changing and polarised world. We have created a dynamic programme that places the importance of independent research and the ability to present alongside the rigour of a traditional knowledge base.

The three humanities subjects combine to produce a series of interesting topics. These include topics as diverse as the Titanic, Environment, Sustainability, The Industrial Revolution, Crime and Punishment, Freedom, Agincourt, Ethics, Journey’s of belief and many more. Alongside these we run trips to enhance the children’s understanding, such as a visit to the ‘The Clink’ in London and the Titanic Museum in Southampton. These allow students to visualise and understand how the elements of each subject work together to produce the world we live in. We take care to include both the knowledge and skills needed to succeed in each subject going forward.

With a focus on inquiry-based learning and the soft skills of organisation, critical thinking, collaboration and active participation, the students learn how to use technology safely and effectively when researching and how to work positively with others to create and present ideas effectively.

In addition, Year 7 and 8 students receive subject specific, academic skill-based lessons to ensure they are well-prepared for their future academic journeys. These lessons compliment the knowledge, autonomy and soft skills developed through project-based learning.
